But life isn’t going to wait for you.
Our deepest hurts often occur at the worst times in life. It’s up to us to practice self-care and get on with living.
Seeking a counselor who is a good fit for you and your story is so important.
The wrong fit may stall your progress and keep you on the sidelines. Below are some questions to consider.
Do their specialties and experience match your concerns?
Many issues addressed in counseling require specialized training and skills.
Even the most well-trained counselor may not be a great fit for you.
Does their experience match areas that relate to your individual concerns?
Will your counselor develop a plan with you?
Take some time to identify why you are seeking counseling.
Collaborate with your counselor to discuss how they will be able to help. They should be able to provide clear framework for how they approach your concerns.
By the second session, your counselor should be able to help identify a map toward reaching your goals and work with you to discuss the work that will be required on your part.
What does your gut say?
When you talk with your counselor, do you feel safe, comfortable and at ease?
Trust your gut and have a conversation if it is telling you something is off.
Do you resonate with their philosophy and approach?
As you read their materials and website, and you get a better understanding of who they are, does his/her approach fit with your understanding of the world and how people change?
If so, and the it seems to be a good match, don’t hesitate to dive into the work and tackle the challenges in front of you.
If you have rapport with the therapist, clear boundaries and definitive goals with a plan to accomplish them, you are ready to take the plunge.
Do your research and trust yourself.
Don’t carry the burden any longer than you have to, the important thing is that you take action.
